North German Day - A celebration up Platt

Musketeers, Market, and the Roar of Cannons at Dömitz Fortress
On Sunday, June 14, Dömitz Fortress will be the stage for the North German Day from 11 am to 5 pm. Thefestival of the Low German language is taking place for the 20th time. With free admission, visitors can expect a varied stage program that combines tradition and modernity. There will also be an arts and crafts market, exciting hands-on activities related to Low German, cannon thunder and a mosaic exhibition.
Plappermöhler Susanne Bliemel will guide you through the day. Artists from all over the north will be performing, including the Ossenkopp duo. Dietmar Schmidt and Martin Korn play traditional and their own Low German songs and invite you to laugh and sing along with titles such as "Boddermelk-Blues".
The Schwerin shanty choir "De Klönköpp" will provide a powerful vocal performance. The singers have dedicated themselves to the songs of wind and sea and combine maritime classics with local folklore and North German wit.
With their music, the five-piece band Wattenläufer is committed to preserving the Low German language. They provide well-known songs with Low German lyrics and a rocking sound. The program of the multiple rock and pop award winners also includes their own rousing compositions.
De Oewerpetters from Wendland are an integral part of the North German Day. With their dances, they also liven up the stage. Sketches in Platt will be presented by the Dierns un Jungs from the Fritz Reuter Dömitz grammar school.
There are numerous other activities for young and old throughout the fortress grounds. The day begins at 10 a.m. with an ecumenical service in the armory. A free guided tour of the fortress in Low and High German starts at 2 pm . The Concordia Shooting Society of 1848 e.V. of the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the Crivitz Shooting Guild 1839 e.V. will be firing firecrackers on the Drache bastion and explaining this tradition.
Visitors can test, refresh or improve their knowledge of Low German in a quiz and a rally. Craft stations, a visit from the life-size Abrafaxe and an arts and crafts market with a wide range of handmade products round off the festival. Food and drink will also be provided.
The Ludwigslust-Parchim Cultural Monuments Association and the town of Dömitz organize the North German Day in cooperation with the Heimatverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. It is financially supported by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim and the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
