150 years of the Lüneburg Railway at Dömitz Fortress

An almost forgotten railroad history Exhibition opening: 150 years of the Lüneburg Railway at Dömitz Fortress, opening 23.11.24 at 2:30 pm

The history of the town of Dömitz also includes the railroad. It not only gave the town one of the longest and most impressive railroad bridges in Germany in 1874, but also connected it to the Wittenberge-Lüneburg Railway. To mark the construction anniversary, a special exhibition will open at the Dömitz Fortress Museum on Saturday, November 23 at 2.30 p.m. on the topic: 150 years of the Lüneburg Railway - an almost forgotten railroad history.

The former railroad line ran from Wittenberge via Cumlosen, Lanz, Lenzen and Polz to Dömitz and on via Dannenberg to Lüneburg. If you explore the region carefully, you can still find individual relics of this almost forgotten line.

In addition to many previously unseen pictures and plans of the line, the special exhibition also features a lovingly detailed diorama of Cumlosen station measuring almost 6 meters in length. It was built by railwayman Peter Sommerfeld in countless hours of his free time. He and his fellow campaigners Mathias Selk and Mario Sembritzki from the Traditionsgemeinschaft Deutsche Reichsbahn Wittenberge organized the exhibition together with the "Alte Burg" town museum in Wittenberge. "We are delighted to be able to bring the exhibition to Dömitz. Supplemented by our own exhibits, it provides a comprehensive and exciting insight into the region's railroad history," says Mandy Botzler, Head of Tourism and Culture for the town of Dömitz.

The special exhibition can be seen until 30.03.2025 during the opening hours of the Dömitz Fortress Museum.
