Abt takes this narrative form as her starting point and spins=0D=0Ait further as “Seefrauen-Garn.” She engages with the cultural=0D=0Ahistory of seafaring and examines, in particular, the history of women=0D=0Aat sea—and thus also a history in which women in seafaring=0D=0Anarratives often remain on land: as those who wait on the shore, while=0D=0Athe sea appears as a male domain of action. _*Fish Stories*_ traces=0D=0Athis history to the Pfaffenteich and the *Petermännchen* ferry to=0D=0ASchwerin, navigating it with a “flag alphabet” of the artist’s=0D=0Apaintings. The ferry, which is over a hundred years old, was built in=0D=0A1924 and brought from the Spreewald to Schwerin at the beginning of=0D=0Athe GDR era. From the 1960s through the 1980s, two female ferry=0D=0Aoperators—Irmtraut Fritz and Waltraud Meyer—were at the helm. With=0D=0Aso much history and so many stories on its steel hull, the ferry=0D=0Aitself becomes a storyteller. In the form of an interview, Abt asks=0D=0Athe ferry about its biography and its passengers.
