Robert Russell Bennett)=0D=0A=0D=0ADuring its summer workshop, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Youth=0D=0AOrchestra is once again putting together a highly varied and=0D=0Amultifaceted concert program: With works by Mieczysław Weinberg,=0D=0AEdward Elgar, George Gershwin, and August Hübner, the musical=0D=0Aspectrum ranges from Eastern European folklore to late Romantic=0D=0Aexpressiveness, all the way to 20th-century American musical culture=0D=0Aand a world premiere composed by a long-standing member of the=0D=0Aorchestra. The program artfully combines themes such as cultural=0D=0Aroots, emotional depth, and the opening up of classical music to=0D=0Apopular influences—all while featuring very distinct individual=0D=0Amusical languages and styles.=0D=0A=0D=0AFounded in 1991, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Youth Orchestra is a=0D=0Aselective ensemble that brings together the best young musicians aged=0D=0A14 to 20, primarily students from music schools in our state or prize=0D=0Awinners of the “Jugend musiziert” competition. This project,=0D=0Aorganized by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Music Council, enables=0D=0Athese top young talents to perform together in a large symphony=0D=0Aorchestra, to master the world’s great musical repertoire, and to=0D=0Acollaborate with internationally renowned soloists and conductors.=0D=0AStanley Dodds has served as the orchestra’s artistic director since=0D=0Athe summer of 2012.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe orchestra meets for two sessions each year. The daily schedule=0D=0Aincludes up to eight hours of intensive rehearsals, during which the=0D=0Ayoung musicians are mentored by experienced orchestra musicians from=0D=0Aorchestras across our state.
