SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Samson and Delilah
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Opera in three acts by Camille Saint-Saëns | Libretto by Ferdinand=0D=0ALemaire | In French with German surtitles | Semi-staged production=0D=0A=0D=0A_“You can feel the earth tremble; lightning flashes across the=0D=0Asky.”_=0D=0ASamson in _*Samson et Dalila*_=0D=0A=0D=0AWith _*Samson et Dalila*_, the Mecklenburg State Theater brings one of=0D=0Athe most fascinating French operas of the 19th century to the stage in=0D=0Aa semi-staged production. In this work, Camille Saint-Saëns combines=0D=0Athe traditions of grand opéra and opéra lyrique with influences from=0D=0AWagnerian music drama and oratorio forms. The orchestra plays a=0D=0Acentral role: shimmering strings, luminous winds, and subtly employed=0D=0Apercussion create a sensual, often exotically tinged soundscape. Grand=0D=0Achoral scenes—at times solemnly austere, at others intoxicatingly=0D=0Aoverwhelming—further enhance the dramatic and sonic impact of this=0D=0Aopera. The challenging vocal parts of the two title characters fully=0D=0Aexplore the tension between dramatic force and lyrical elegance.=0D=0A_Samson et Dalila_ tells of power, seduction, and a conflict in which=0D=0Aviolence begets ever more violence. Samson leads the Israelites in=0D=0Atheir resistance against the Philistines and is celebrated as a=0D=0Asavior. To extract the secret of his superhuman strength, the=0D=0Aseductive Delilah is sent by the Philistines to tempt him—with=0D=0Asuccess. Deprived of his strength, captured, and blinded, Samson is=0D=0Anow at the mercy of his enemies. In their triumphant celebration, they=0D=0Aparade him before the crowd—but in the moment of his greatest=0D=0Ahumiliation, he finds new strength and carries out a final act of=0D=0Aretribution.=0D=0A
