In addition to “exhibiting”=0D=0Aand “educating,” “collecting,” “research,” and=0D=0A“preservation”—all linked to the goal of documenting the=0D=0Atechnological and industrial history of our state and bringing it to=0D=0Alife. With this new format, we’d like to draw attention to hidden=0D=0Atreasures!=0D=0A=0D=0AEVERYDAY LIFE ON TWO WHEELS=0D=0A=0D=0AOur current “Object of the Summer” is a 1963 Simson KR 50, which=0D=0Awas mass-produced from 1958 to 1964 at VEB Fahrzeug- und Gerätebau=0D=0ASimson Suhl. Even better known today is its legendary successor: the=0D=0AKR 51, better known as the “Schwalbe.” As part of the famous=0D=0ASimson bird series (Schwalbe, Spatz, Star, Sperber, Habicht), it was=0D=0Aproduced over 1.1 million times from 1964 to 1986. Thanks to its 3.4=0D=0Ato 3.7 PS, the popular two-seater reached a top speed of 60 km/h.=0D=0A=0D=0AThanks to a special provision in the Unification Treaty, it is=0D=0Aclassified as a moped despite its 60 km/h top speed and can be ridden=0D=0Aby fifteen-year-olds without a license —a key reason for its=0D=0Aenduring popularity compared to modern scooters, which are limited to=0D=0Aa top speed of 45 km/h. Simson vehicles have thus become a true symbol=0D=0Aof identity.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe KR 50 was the first small scooter produced in the GDR.
