SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Publishers That Disappeared in the GDR
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Book presentation with Christoph Links at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern=0D=0AState Library, in cooperation with the Pirckheimer Society=0D=0A=0D=0AFriedrich Bahn Publishing House, the Mecklenburg Publishing House,=0D=0ALoef Verlag, or Petermänken Verlag—by the end of the GDR, there=0D=0Awere only 78 licensed publishing houses left, even though the Soviet=0D=0AMilitary Administration had granted licenses to more than 200=0D=0Apublishing houses after 1945. Publishing historian and friend of=0D=0APirckheimer, Christoph Links, has researched the history of 150=0D=0Avanished publishing houses and explores the question of why and how=0D=0Athey disappeared. Were they expropriated by the state for political=0D=0Areasons, forced to close due to tax laws, did they relocate to the=0D=0AWest, did they shut down of their own accord, or were they merged=0D=0Aagainst their will? Underlying this is the fundamental question of=0D=0Awhat means and methods the SED leadership employed in the cultural=0D=0Asector, and how it eliminated intellectual and economic competition in=0D=0Aorder to create financially lucrative monopolies for its favored=0D=0Acompanies.=0D=0A=0D=0AOn June 24, starting at 7:00 p.m., Christoph Links will present his=0D=0Abook *Verschwundene Verlage: Ein unbekanntes Kapitel ostdeutscher=0D=0AKulturgeschichte (1945–1990)* at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State=0D=0ALibrary and discuss some extraordinary cases. Till Schröder, editor=0D=0Aof “Marginalien—Journal of Book Art & Bibliophilia” and vice=0D=0Achair of the Pirckheimer Society, will join the discussion. That=0D=0Aevening, the State Library will display selected items from the=0D=0Acollections of these vanished publishing houses.=0D=0A=0D=0AA reception will follow.=0D=0A=0D=0ARegistration for this event is not required. Admission is free.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe Pirckheimer Society was founded in Berlin in 1956 by “book=0D=0Alovers” such as Wieland Herzfelde, Arnold Zweig, and Werner Klemke.=0D=0AToday, it brings together around 600 culture enthusiasts from Germany=0D=0Aand abroad, particularly bibliophiles and collectors of prints and=0D=0Abookplates. The society is named after the Nuremberg humanist and book=0D=0Acollector Willibald Pirckheimer (1470–1530). Four times a year, the=0D=0APirckheimer Society publishes “Marginalien,” the only regularly=0D=0Aappearing bibliophile journal in Germany. The society is active=0D=0Alocally through its regional groups. In addition to collecting and=0D=0Apreserving “old books,” the Pirckheimer Society cultivates and=0D=0Asupports modern book art and graphic design and collaborates with=0D=0Ayoung book designers and artists.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe Günther Uecker State Library of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern traces its=0D=0Aorigins to the Ducal Government Library, founded in 1779, and, as a=0D=0Acritical infrastructure, preserves significant historical collections=0D=0Aas well as a large collection of works from and about=0D=0AMecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has=0D=0Alegally mandated the State Library in Schwerin to collect, catalog,=0D=0Aand archive the state’s current printed works for the future.=0D=0AAccording to state law and the regulation on the deposit of printed=0D=0Aworks, all printed materials published in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern must=0D=0Abe deposited with the State Library free of charge within one month of=0D=0Apublication. The State Library acquires titles about=0D=0AMecklenburg-Vorpommern that are published outside the state. The State=0D=0ALibrary is a department of the State Office for Culture and Historic=0D=0APreservation. The historic building at its location on=0D=0AJohannes-Stelling-Straße is now part of the Schwerin UNESCO World=0D=0AHeritage Site.=0D=0A
