SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Landesjugendorchester Hamburg / Ann-Beth Solvang / Johannes Witt
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:The Hamburg State Youth Orchestra (LJO) has been an integral part of=0D=0Athe young music scene for over 55 years as the select orchestra of the=0D=0AFree and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Around 90 musicians aged 14-25=0D=0Awill perform works by great late Romantic composers in the spring=0D=0Aconcerts conducted by Johannes Witt. =0D=0A=0D=0ARichard Strauss’ songs »Zueignung,« »Wiegenlied,« and »Meinem=0D=0AKinde und Morgen!« impressively demonstrate the diversity of his=0D=0Aearly and middle songwriting. They come from four different song=0D=0Acycles, but all works are united by an intimacy and emotionality that=0D=0Ais expressed in lyrical arcs and passionate urgency. Strauss wrote=0D=0Aseveral songs especially for his wife, the singer Pauline Strauss-de=0D=0AAhna – he gave her the song collection including »Morgen!« as a=0D=0Awedding gift. The composer recalled that his wife performed this song=0D=0Ain particular »with an expression and poetry that I have never heard=0D=0Asince.« »Meinem Kinde«, on the other hand, was written after the=0D=0Abirth of Strauss’s only son. Originally composed for voice and=0D=0Apiano, all the songs were later colorfully orchestrated by Strauss.=0D=0A=0D=0AGustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, often called »Titan,«=0D=0Amarks his impressive entry into the symphonic genre. Composed between=0D=0A1884 and 1888, this large-scale work combines late Romantic=0D=0Aexpressiveness with sound ideas that were innovative for Mahler’s=0D=0Atime. The composer unfolds a vast musical landscape: from the=0D=0Amysteriously floating beginning to folk motifs and dramatic outbursts.=0D=0AParticularly characteristic is the third movement, which surprises=0D=0Awith a dark, alienated version of »Brother Jacob.« In the final=0D=0Amovement, the symphony finally culminates in a festive apotheosis.=0D=0AWith this work, Mahler laid the foundation for his lifelong quest to=0D=0Ashape the symphony as a blueprint for the world.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe patron of the LJO Hamburg is the First Mayor, Dr. Peter=0D=0ATschentscher. The ensemble is sponsored by the Landesmusikrat in der=0D=0AFreien und Hansestadt Hamburg e. V. (State Music Council of the Free=0D=0Aand Hanseatic City of Hamburg) and supported by the Ministry of=0D=0ACulture and Media.=0D=0A=0D=0APERFORMERS=0D=0A=0D=0ALANDESJUGENDORCHESTER HAMBURG orchestra=0D=0A=0D=0AANN-BETH SOLVANG mezzo-soprano=0D=0A=0D=0AJOHANNES WITT conductor=0D=0A=0D=0APROGRAM=0D=0A=0D=0ARICHARD STRAUSS=0D=0AZueignung op. 10/1=0D=0A=0D=0ARICHARD STRAUSS=0D=0AWiegenlied op. 41/1=0D=0A=0D=0ARICHARD STRAUSS=0D=0AMeinem Kinde op. 37/3=0D=0A=0D=0ARICHARD STRAUSS=0D=0AMorgen! op. 27/4=0D=0A=0D=0AGUSTAV MAHLER=0D=0ASymphony No. 1 in D major=0D=0A
