The octet by the=0D=0Asixteen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was one of the works=0D=0Apremiered during these Sunday concerts. It can not only be considered=0D=0Aone of the greatest masterpieces of all chamber music, but also a=0D=0A»testimony and symbol of radiant youth« (Eric Werner) and a sign of=0D=0ABerlin’s aspirations in the era of idealism.=0D=0A=0D=0AJust as Mendelssohn’s composition can stand for a new,=0D=0Ahumanistically influenced Berlin, Enescu’s work – also the work of=0D=0Aa highly gifted young man – does the same for Paris. Even the basic=0D=0Aidea of this octet is »Parisian«: the traditional four movements of=0D=0Athe late Romantic cyclical form – main movement, scherzo, adagio and=0D=0Afinale – are thematically interlocked in such a way that a single=0D=0Amonumental structure is created. As in the prototypes of this=0D=0A»multi-movement in single-movement form«, such as César Franck’s=0D=0Apiano quintet, Enescu also inserts his main theme in a motto-like=0D=0Aleitmotif between all the sub-movements.
