The motor sailer UNDINE, built in 1931 as FRANZISKA at the Gebr. Niestern & Co. shipyard in Delfzijl (NL), was launched as a cargo sailing ship. After serving as a cargo ship on the Baltic and North Seas, including during World War II, it sailed in coastal waters until 1980. The ship, its technology, its operating principles, and its interior illustrate the living and working environment on a cargo motor sailer in the 1930s. In 2017, the Hamburg Maritim Foundation took over the cargo schooner with the goal of getting the ship back on track and enabling its operation as a heritage ship. The cargo hold is to be preserved as unchanged as possible. The museum-worthy 120-hp diesel engine from 1936, a four-cylinder "Deutsche Werke" from Kiel, is also to continue running in the future. The restoration is being actively supported by the "Friends of the Cargo Schooner UNDINE e. V." association. The association's goal is to restore the historic, gaff-rigged cargo schooner, built in 1931, to sailing status with the help of volunteers, and to bring the moving history of this maritime cultural monument to life on day trips with guests. The association was founded in 2019 and still has a lot of work ahead of it. We can use every helping hand – regardless of age or maritime background. It's always fun to accomplish something together. If you'd like to get involved, come aboard and meet the crew and the ship.
