Duisburger Philharmoniker / Diana Tishchenko / Stefan Blunier

Since its beginnings as a municipal orchestra in 1877, the Duisburger Philharmoniker can look back on a long and successful history. Richard Strauss, Max Reger and Paul Hindemith conducted their own works in Duisburg, and Hindemith’s Concerto for Orchestra even had its world premiere here. Today, the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, which is based in the Mercatorhalle Philharmonic Hall, is one of the main pillars of the flourishing cultural landscape in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. For the debut concert in the Elbphilharmonie, conductor Stefan Blunier has put together a programme that revels in lush, romantic tones.

This includes the overture to »Der Freischütz« by Carl Maria von Weber, which brings together all the hits from this popular opera, and the wistful, melancholy First Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, played by Crimean-born violinist Diana Tishchenko. The programme ends with Antonín Dvoák’s Eighth Symphony, a work overflowing with musical ideas. The »melodies just fly at me«, wrote the composer himself about this cheerful and life-affirming symphony.
